Abstract
Objectives :The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of parents’ dental health behavior on elementary school students. The purpose of this analysis is that we can aid children in correcting their dental health behavior and help them create a plan to establish new and proper dental habits.
Methods :This survey was conducted between March 21, 2007 and March 24, 2007, in Kyunggi-Do. The research was carried out at one elementary school, with students in grades 4, 5 and 6. 364 students were surveyed through a questionnaire. The collected data was examined using the SPSS 11.0 program, using frequency, mean and standard deviation analyses, T-tests, one-way ANOVA and Duncan’s test. Further analysis was done using Pearson’s Correlation Coefficient and Multiple Regression analysis.
Results :First, the children’s dental health behavior is positively influenced by the following two factors from the dental health belief model : The child’s perceived benefits and the perceived seriousness. Second, The children’s oral health characteristics are directly correlated with the following determining factors ; the students grade, the mother’s level of education, and the family income level, the amount of conversation with the family, the child’s favorite food, the students experience with oral health education, and the purpose of their visits to dental clinics. Third, the children’s dental health behavior and dental health care will have the greatest influence on their parents’s dental health behavior.
Conclusion :Based on these results, it is necessary for patients to help the dental health behavior and dental health care of their children. We found that the child’s dental health behavior and dental health care will have the greatest influence on their parents’s dental health behavior.
